Hariyali Amavasya will be observed on Wednesday, August 12, 2026. Falling during the holy month of Shravan, this sacred Amavasya is dedicated to Bhagwan Shiv, Maa Parvati, and nature.
The word “Hariyali” means greenery, while “Amavasya” refers to the New Moon day. Together, Hariyali Amavasya symbolizes new beginnings, gratitude for nature's blessings, and spiritual renewal. As it falls during the monsoon season, the festival celebrates nature's beauty and reminds people to live in harmony with the environment.
As Hariyali Amavasya is celebrated during the sacred month of Shravan, it is an especially auspicious occasion to offer prayers to Bhagwan Shiv and Maa Parvati. Special darshans of Bhagwan Krishna are also organized in places like Mathura and Vrindavan. Worship of the Peepal tree is also done by many people as Peepal is said to be the dwelling place of Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh (Bhagwan Shiv) and represents the close connection between devotion and nature.
Devotees wake up early, take a bath, and wear clean clothes before beginning the day's worship. Many visit Bhagwan Shiv temples and offer water, milk, bilva leaves, flowers, and fruits to the Shivling. They also pray to Maa Parvati for family happiness, peace, and prosperity.
Hariyali Amavasya is also an important day in Mathura and Vrindavan. Special darshan are organised at temples like the Dwarkadhish Temple and Banke Bihari Temple, where thousands of devotees gather to seek the blessings of Bhagwan Krishna. The beautifully decorated Phool Bangla at Banke Bihari Temple is one of the main attractions during this festival.
Since the festival celebrates nature, many devotees worship the sacred Peepal tree and plant saplings such as Peepal, Neem, or Banyan, and water existing trees as a mark of gratitude towards nature. Charity is another important part of the day. Devotees donate food, clothes, green items, umbrellas, or other essentials to the poor, the needy, and Brahmins. Some devotees also perform Pitru Tarpan and offer prayers for the peace of their ancestors.
