Sawan Pradosh Vrat Significance
The word “Pradosh” refers to the sacred period just after sunset, a time believed to be especially dear to Mahadev. Devotees believe that worshipping Bhagwan Shiv during Pradosh Kaal removes negativity, brings peace of mind, and helps overcome difficulties in life.
When Pradosh Vrat falls during the holy month of Shravan, it is considered even more auspicious. Since the entire month is dedicated to Bhagwan Shiv, devotees believe that worshipping him during Pradosh Kaal in Sawan brings greater spiritual merit, cleanses past karmas, and makes their prayers even more meaningful.
What is the Story Behind Sawan Pradosh Vrat?
During the churning of the ocean by the Devas and Asuras, a deadly poison called “Halahal” emerged before the nectar of immortality (Amrit). The poison was so powerful that it threatened to destroy the entire universe. Unable to stop it, the Devas prayed to Bhagwan Shiv for help.
To protect all living beings, Mahadev drank the poison. Seeing this, Maa Parvati gently held his throat so that the poison would not spread through his body. Because of this, his throat turned blue, and he came to be known as “Neelkanth.”
Later, the Devas realised that they had forgotten to worship Mahadev before beginning the Samudra Manthan. Filled with devotion and gratitude, they prayed to Bhagwan Shiv during the evening time of Trayodashi Tithi and asked for his forgiveness. Pleased with their devotion, Mahadev blessed them.
Since then, devotees have been worshipping Mahadev during Pradosh Kaal with devotion and faith to seek his blessings and protection.
What Devotees Do on Sawan Pradosh Vrat?
Devotees wake up early, take a bath, and wear clean clothes before beginning the vrat. Many observe a fast throughout the day and avoid grains, onion, garlic, and tamasic food. Some keep a fruit-only fast or eat simple sattvic food according to their health and family tradition.
During Pradosh Kaal, devotees visit Bhagwan Shiv temples or worship at home. They perform Jalabhishek or Rudrabhishek, offer Gangajal, milk, bel patra, flowers, fruits, and dhatura to the Shivling, and pray to Bhagwan Shiv and Maa Parvati. Many devotees chant “Om Namah Shivaya”, recite the “Om Tryambakam Yajamahe Sugandhim Pushtivardhanam, Urvarukamiva Bandhanan Mrityor Mukshiya Maamritat” mantra, or Shiv Chalisa. Some also spend the evening listening to Shiv bhajans and meditating.
