Hariyali Teej Significance
At its heart, Hariyali Teej celebrates devotion, love, and the way nature comes alive again after the rains. The festival marks the union of Maa Parvati and Bhagwan Shiv, a bond often held up as an example of patience, love, and marital harmony. Because Maa Parvati's devotion is what eventually brought her Bhagwan Shiv, women observing this vrat pray with the same faith, hoping for a happy and peaceful married life of their own.
There's also a simpler, earthier side to this festival. “Hariyali” itself means greenery, and the lush monsoon landscape around this time is seen as a sign of new beginnings, fertility, and prosperity. Between devotion and the season itself, Hariyali Teej becomes a celebration of both, giving families and women an opportunity to celebrate love and togetherness.
What Is the Story Behind Hariyali Teej?
According to a popular belief, Maa Parvati is believed to have taken several births because she wanted Bhagwan Shiv as her husband. In one of her births, she was born as the daughter of King Himavan. She then performed severe penance for many years with the wish of marrying Mahadev.
Maa Parvati remained firm in her devotion despite many difficulties. She gave up food and later even stopped eating dried leaves, earning the name “Aparna.” Her father, however, wanted her to marry Bhagwan Vishnu. Maa Parvati did not agree because her heart was devoted to Bhagwan Shiv.
On the Tritiya Tithi of Shukla Paksha during Shravan, Maa Parvati made a Shivling from sand and worshipped Bhagwan Shiv with complete devotion. Pleased with her penance, Mahadev appeared before her and accepted her as his wife.
What Devotees Do on Hariyali Teej?
Women wake up early, take a bath, wear green sarees or suits, green bangles, mehendi, sindoor, and other traditional shringar. Many keep a strict fast and avoid onions, garlic, and other tamasic foods throughout the day. Meanwhile, some consume only fruits, milk, and simple sattvic food according to their health and family tradition.
In some Indian states, women also gather with family and friends to sing traditional Teej songs and enjoy swings decorated with flowers. Songs such as “Aayo Aayo Teej Tyohar” are sung in some parts of Rajasthan, while women in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar may sing traditional Kajri and Malhar songs.
On Hariyali Teej, devotees listen to the Teej vrat katha, perform aarti, and pray to Maa Parvati and Bhagwan Shiv by offering flowers, Gangajal, bilva leaves, fruits, sweets, and shringar items during the puja.
