Hartalika Teej Vrat Significance
Hartalika Teej is a combination of “Harat,” meaning abduction or carrying away, and “Aalika,” meaning a female friend. Maa Parvati's friend took her away to the forest so that she could continue her tapasya and follow her wish to marry Bhagwan Shiv. This is how the festival came to be known as “Hartalika Teej” and the festival is seen as an example of unwavering faith. She did not give up even when circumstances went against her wishes. Her penance finally brought her the blessing she had prayed for.
The festival also gives a beautiful place to “friendship.” Maa Parvati's friend supported her when she needed help the most and took her to a safe place where she could continue her spiritual journey.
Hartalika Teej Vrat Katha
As per the sacred legend, Maa Parvati wished to marry Bhagwan Shiv. Her father, King Himavan, accepted a marriage proposal from Bhagwan Vishnu after Devarshi Narada brought the proposal. Maa Parvati, however, had already given her heart to Bhagwan Shiv.
Upon learning about her father’s decision, she became deeply perturbed (distressed). Her close friend understood her pain and took her away to a secluded forest. There, Maa Parvati continued her penance and devoted herself completely to Bhagwan Shiv.
There, Maa Parvati performed intense penance and worshiped Bhagwan Shiv with complete devotion. On the Tritiya Tithi of Shukla Paksha in Bhadrapada, she created a “Shivling” using sand and clay and continued her worship throughout the night. Her sincere devotion touched Bhagwan Shiv, who finally appeared before her and accepted her as his consort.
This story makes Hartalika Teej a reminder of Maa Parvati's faith, patience, and determination.
