Parama Ekadashi will be observed on 11 June 2026, Thursday. This sacred Ekadashi falls during the Krishna Paksha of Adhik Maas, which is also known as Purushottam Maas.
Parama Ekadashi is considered one of the most sacred Ekadashis because it falls during Adhik Maas, a special month that is dedicated to Bhagwan Vishnu, the protector and sustainer of the universe. Since Adhik Maas appears only once every 32.5 months (about every 2.5 to 3 years), devotees consider this Ekadashi especially auspicious.
Many devotees observe a vrat, chant Bhagwan Vishnu mantras, and offer prayers for peace and prosperity.
The story of Parama Ekadashi is connected to a poor Brahmin named Sumedha and his devoted wife Pavitra.
Although they lived in poverty, they never lost faith in Bhagwan Vishnu. One day, the great sage Kaundinya visited their home. Seeing their difficulties, Pavitra humbly asked the sage for a way to overcome their suffering.
The sage advised them to observe Parama Ekadashi Vrat during Adhik Maas with complete devotion. He explained that Bhagwan Vishnu is especially pleased by sincere worship on this day.
Following his advice, Sumedha and Pavitra observed the vrat with full faith. Pleased by their devotion, Bhagwan Vishnu blessed them with prosperity, happiness, and a better life.
On Parama Ekadashi, devotees wake up early in the morning, take a bath, and wear clean clothes before beginning the vrat. Many people keep a strict fast and avoid grains (rice, oats, corn, etc.), onion, garlic, and other tamasic foods throughout the day. Meanwhile, some devotees consume only fruits, milk, and simple sattvic food as part of the falahar vrat.
Throughout the day, devotees worship Bhagwan Vishnu with flowers, Tulsi leaves, incense, and diyas. Many spend time chanting “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya,” reading Vishnu Sahasranama (1,000 names of Bhagwan Vishnu), or listening to Shri Hari bhajans with devotion.
Many devotees also stay awake at night and spend time in prayer, bhakti, and meditation. In the spirit of devotion, many Sanatanis also offer food, clothes, and other essentials to Brahmins and the needy as seva to Shri Hari.
Those who wish to participate in such devotional activities can also explore the sacred Sevas arranged by Sanatan Sansaar for this holy occasion.
