What is the Significance of Pithori Vrat?

It is not only important for women with children, who pray for their children’s health, well-being, prosperity and happiness, but also for women who do not yet have children. It is believed that by observing this vrat with faith and devotion, they will be blessed with healthy offspring.

Another important aspect that makes this vrat significant is that it falls on Bhadrapada Amavasya. And amavasya is considered an auspicious time to pray and seek the blessings of ancestors for the peace and well-being of the family. Because of this, the day carries a double purpose: seeking blessings for children and paying respect to the generations that came before.

What is the Story Behind the Pithori Vrat?

As per Bhavishya Purana, the story of Pithori vrat was told by Mata Parvati to Indrani, the wife of Indra Dev. According to the story, there once was a daughter-in-law named Videha who lost all eight of her sons, one after the other. Videha was very sad because of this, so she left her home and went into a forest. There, she came across the Chausath (64) Yoginis.

Videha started serving them with devotion and care without even knowing or realizing who they actually were. Pleased with her service, the Yoginis revealed their true identity and asked her to make a wish. Videha said that her only wish was that her sons be brought back to life. At once, all eight of her sons were restored to her.

What Devotees Do on Pithori Vrat?

On Pithori vrat, mothers wake up early, take a bath, and wear clean clothes before beginning the vrat. Many observe a full-day fast, while others consume fruits, milk, and simple sattvic food. In the evening, women prepare a clean puja space and worship Maa Pithori, Mata Durga, and the Sixty-Four Yoginis, along with the Saptamatrikas (Brahmani, Maheshvari, Kaumari, Vaishnavi, Varahi, Indrani, and Chamunda).

In many houses, women also make small symbolic forms of the goddesses using wheat or rice flour. Devotees recite the “Pithori Vrat Katha” and offer flowers, kumkum, rice, fruits, sweets, and other offerings.

As the vrat falls on Bhadrapada Amavasya, many families also perform Pitru Tarpan to seek the blessings of their ancestors. People also donate food, clothes, grains, or other useful items to those in need.
