Sawan Shivratri Significance
Sawan Shivratri is the Masik Shivratri that falls during the holy month of Shravan, a month that is completely dedicated to Bhagwan Shiv. What is the Story Behind Sawan Shivratri?
The story of Sawan Shivratri is connected with the Samudra Manthan. During the churning of the ocean by the Devas and Asuras, many divine treasures emerged. But before Amrit (the nectar of immortality) appeared, a deadly poison called Halahal came out of the ocean. The poison was so powerful that it could destroy all life in the entire universe.
Unable to stop it, the Devas prayed to Bhagwan Shiv for help. To protect all living beings, Mahadev drank the poison without thinking of himself. Seeing this, Maa Parvati gently held his throat so that the poison would not spread through his body. Because of this, Bhagwan Shiv's throat turned blue, and he came to be known as Neelkanth.
Since then, devotees have offered milk and Ganga jal to Bhagwan Shiv to cool down the intense heat of the poison and soothe his throat. According to a popular belief, demon king Ravana was among the first devotees to bring Ganga jal and offer it to the Shivling after Bhagwan Shiv consumed the Halahal poison. This offering is believed to have taken place at the ancient Pura Mahadev Temple near Baghpat in Uttar Pradesh, which is regarded by many as the place where the tradition of the Kanwar Yatra began. Even today, millions of Kanwariyas carry Ganga jal during the month of Sawan and offer it to Bhagwan Shiv on Sawan Shivratri with faith and devotion.
What Devotees Do on Sawan Shivratri?
On Sawan Shivratri, devotees wake up early in the morning, take a bath, and wear clean clothes before beginning the vrat. Many people keep a strict fast and avoid grains (such as rice, oats, and corn), onions, garlic, and other tamasic foods throughout the day. Meanwhile, some devotees consume only fruits, milk, and simple sattvic food according to their health and family tradition.
Throughout the day, devotees worship Bhagwan Shiv by offering Ganga jal, milk, Panchamrit, bilva leaves, flowers, dhatura, fruits, and incense to the Shivling. Many chant “Om Namah Shivaya,” recite the “Mahamrityunjaya Mantra” or “Shiva Sahasranama” (1,000 names of Bhagwan Shiv), or listen to bhajans with devotion.
