Bhauma Pradosh vrat will be observed on Tuesday, 8 September 2026. This sacred vrat is dedicated to both Bhagwan Shiv and Bhagwan Hanuman and is observed when Pradosh vrat falls on a Tuesday.
Bhauma Pradosh vrat is among the most sacred vrats dedicated to Bhagwan Shiv. Since it falls on a Tuesday, the day is also associated with Bhagwan Hanuman and Mangal Dev, the celestial personification of the planet Mars, a Navagraha deity.
The word “Bhauma” refers to Tuesday. On the other hand, the word “Pradosh” refers to the evening period just after sunset, which is known as “Pradosh Kaal”. This period is considered highly auspicious for Bhagwan Shiv puja. According to Hindu beliefs, Bhagwan Shiv blesses devotees who worship him during this sacred time with: “peace, prosperity, and freedom from difficulties”.
Bhauma Pradosh also plays an important role in the lives of people who have “Mangal Dosha” in their Kundali. When it comes to Vedic astrology, “Mangal Dosha” is closely linked with “marriage, relationship conflicts, anger, and family difficulties”. Since Bhagwan Shiv holds a special place in Hindu mythology as “Navagraheshwara” (the supreme master, controller, and the ultimate source of cosmic energy behind the Navagrahas), worshipping him on a day that’s considered auspicious for Mangal Dev seems to have the potential to pacify the violent influence of the planet.
The vrat is also traditionally known as: “Rin Mochan Pradosh”. Here, “Rin” means debt. Devotees believe that observing this vrat can bring relief from: “debts, financial difficulties, and monetary stress”
An old woman once lived in a city with her son: “Mangaliya”. She was a great devotee of Bhagwan Hanuman and used to fast every Tuesday. She strictly followed the vrat rules and never plastered her house or dug the soil on Tuesdays.
One day Bhagwan Hanuman came to test her devotion in the form of a sage and entered into her house and shouted “Is there a Hanuman devotee who could fulfill my wish?”, upon hearing this the old lady came out and respectfully asked the sage “Maharaj, how can I serve you?”, Bhagwan Hanuman in the form of a sage said that he was very hungry and wanted some small patch of ground plastered so that he could cook his food. On hearing the sage’s words the woman said that she was ready to do whatever the sage wanted except this because plastering and digging the soil was not her work on Tuesday.
After testing the woman three times, the sage said to bring her son, Mangaliya, so that he could make him lie down, light a fire on his back, and cook food. Upon hearing this, the old woman was distressed. But there wasn’t anything that she could do, as she had already given her word. Therefore, with a heavy heart, she brought her son and handed him over.
The sage laid Mangaliya face down and lit the fire. The old woman went back inside her house in a distraught state. After the food was ready, the sage called her again and asked her to bring Mangaliya so that he could also have the offering.
Upon hearing this, the old woman broke down. She couldn’t even bear to hear her son’s name, not after what had happened. But the sage pressed her to call him anyway. When she finally did, Mangaliya came running, whole and smiling, as if nothing had happened at all.
Relief and disbelief flooded through her. She understood that the person is no ordinary sage and fell at his feet. That’s when Bhagwan Hanuman revealed his true form and blessed her with a never-ending devotion.
On Bhauma Pradosh vrat, devotees wake up early in the morning, take a bath, and wear clean clothes before beginning the vrat. Many people keep a strict nirjala vrat, while others consume fruits, milk, and simple sattvic food.
Devotees begin the day with prayers to Bhagwan Shiv and Bhagwan Hanuman. Some devotees also visit a Shiv temple or Hanuman temple and offer their prayers. In the evening, during Pradosh Kaal, devotees worship Bhagwan Shiv and perform Shiv Rudrabhishek Puja. They offer Ganga jal, milk, bilva leaves, flowers, and fruits to Shivling. Many chant “Om Namah Shivaya,” or recite “Shiv Chalisa,” “Hanuman Chalisa,” or the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra.
Devotees also donate food and clothes and help those in need on this day. Those who wish to participate in such devotional activities can also explore the sacred Sevas arranged by: “Sanatan Sansaar”.
The most auspicious time for worship is during Pradosh Kaal. In 2026, the Bhauma Pradosh puja muhurat is from 06:43 PM to 09:01 PM.
