Jyeshtha Adhika Amavasya is one of the most sacred days of Adhik Maas. Since Adhik Maas is dedicated to Bhagwan Vishnu, devotees believe that prayers, charity, chanting, and devotional activities performed on this day bring eternal blessings.
Amavasya is also a time for remembering ancestors and offering prayers for their peace. Many devotees perform Pitru Tarpan and pray for the well-being of their family. According to Hindu tradition, acts of kindness, service, and charity performed on this day are believed to bring peace, positivity, and spiritual growth.
Many devotees worship Bhagwan Vishnu and Maa Lakshmi and pray for happiness, prosperity, and freedom from difficulties.
There are multiple stories associated with Jyeshtha Amavasya. But the most famous among them is the legend of Princess Savitri and her husband Satyavan.
Princess Savitri was well known for her devotion, wisdom, and determination. She chose Satyavan as her husband even after learning that he was destined to die within a year. On the day when Satyavan's destined time arrived, the god of death, Yamraj, came to claim Satyavan's soul. But Savitri did not lose faith and followed him relentlessly, engaging him in philosophical debates. Impressed by her wisdom, piety, and devotion, Yamraj granted her boons (excluding her husband's life).
Cleverly, Savitri also secured the boon of becoming a mother, which forced Yamraj to return Satyavan's life so the boon could be fulfilled. Since this legend took place on a new moon day, married women worship the banyan tree on Jyeshtha Amavasya and pray for their husbands' longevity and marital bliss.
On Jyeshtha Adhika Amavasya, devotees wake up early in the morning, take a bath, and wear clean clothes before beginning the vrat. Many people keep a strict fast and avoid grains (rice, oats, corn, etc.), onion, garlic, and other tamasic foods throughout the day. Meanwhile, some devotees consume only fruits, milk, and simple sattvic food as part of the falahar vrat.
Throughout the day, devotees worship Bhagwan Vishnu with flowers, Tulsi leaves, incense, and diyas. Many spend time chanting “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya,” reading Vishnu Sahasranama (1,000 names of Lord Vishnu), or listening to Shri Hari bhajans with devotion.
A large number of devotees perform Pitru Tarpan and offer prayers for their ancestors. In the spirit of devotion, many Sanatanis also offer food, clothes, and other essentials to Brahmins and the needy as seva to Shri Hari.
Those who wish to participate in such devotional activities can also explore the sacred Sevas arranged by Sanatan Sansaar for this holy occasion.
