What is the Significance of Pradosh Vrat?
Pradosh vrat is observed to seek the blessings of Bhagwan Shiv and Maa Parvati. Many devotees believe that worshipping Mahadev during Pradosh Kaal removes negativity and brings positivity into life. People also observe this sacred vrat for relief from problems related to health, career, marriage, and mental stress.
The word “Pradosh” refers to the evening time just after sunset, which is believed to be highly auspicious for Shiv Puja. According to Hindu beliefs, during this sacred time, Bhagwan Shiv blesses devotees who remember him with devotion and a pure heart. This is why many devotees visit Shiv temples in the evening, perform jal abhishek on Shivling, light diyas, and chant “Om Namah Shivaya”.
What is the Story Behind Pradosh Vrat?
The story of Pradosh vrat is connected to the sacred Samudra Manthan mentioned in Hindu scriptures.
During the churning of the ocean by the Devas and Asuras, many divine things emerged from the sea. But before Amrit (nectar of immortality) appeared, a deadly poison called “Halahal” came out of the ocean. It was so powerful that it could have easily destroyed the entire universe.
Frightened by Halahal, all the Devas started praying to Bhagwan Shiv for help. To protect every living being, Mahadev consumed the poison without thinking about himself.
When Maa Parvati saw this, she gently held Bhagwan Shiv’s throat so that the poison would not spread throughout his body. Because of this, Bhagwan Shiv’s throat turned blue, and from that day onwards, he also came to be known as Neelkanth.
Later, the Devas realised that they had forgotten to worship Mahadev before beginning the Samudra Manthan. Filled with devotion and gratitude, they prayed to Bhagwan Shiv during the evening time of Trayodashi Tithi and asked for his forgiveness. Pleased with their prayers, Mahadev forgave them and blessed them.
Since then, devotees have been worshipping Mahadev during Pradosh Kaal with devotion and faith to seek his blessings and protection.
How is Pradosh Vrat Observed by Devotees?
Devotees observing Pradosh vrat spend the day remembering and praying to Bhagwan Shiv. Many people observe a fast and avoid grains, onion, garlic, and tamasic food throughout the day. Some devotees consume only fruits, milk, and simple sattvic food.
In the evening during Pradosh Kaal, devotees worship Bhagwan Shiv and Maa Parvati, visit temples, and perform Shiv Rudrabhishek puja. Many chant “Om Namah Shivaya,” recite Shiv Chalisa or Mahamrityunjaya Mantra, and listen to Shiv bhajans.
