What is the Significance of Kalashtami?

Bhagwan Kaal Bhairav is worshipped as the protector of his devotees and the guardian of time (kaal). Devotees believe that worshipping him on this sacred day removes fear, negativity, and obstacles from life. Many also pray for protection, courage, peace, and success in their daily lives.

Among all the Kalashtami observances in a year, the one that falls in the Margashirsha month is celebrated as Kalabhairav Jayanti. It is believed to mark the appearance day of Bhagwan Kaal Bhairav and is considered the most important Kalashtami of the year.

What is the Story Behind Kalashtami?

As per the Shiv Purana, Bhagwan Brahma and Bhagwan Vishnu were once discussing who among the deities is the supreme creator and ruler of the universe. During this conversation, Bhagwan Brahma became proud of his position. He stated that he was the supreme creator. He believed that because he had five heads, just like Bhagwan Shiv, he could do everything that Bhagwan Shiv could do. Therefore, he considered himself worthy of the highest worship rather than Bhagwan Shiv.

Seeing Bhagwan Brahma's growing ego, Bhagwan Shiv decided to teach an important lesson. From his divine power emerged Bhagwan Kaal Bhairav, a fierce and powerful form of Bhagwan Shiv.

Bhagwan Kaal Bhairav immediately removed Brahma's fifth head with the nail of his finger. At that very moment, Brahma's pride was destroyed. Realising his mistake, Bhagwan Brahma became humble and prayed for forgiveness.

Although Bhagwan Kaal Bhairav acted on Bhagwan Shiv's command, he incurred the sin of “Brahma Hatya” for severing Bhagwan Brahma's head. Carrying the skull with him, he wandered through many sacred places.

When Bhagwan Kaal Bhairav finally reached the holy city of Kashi, he was freed from that burden. From that day onwards, he chose to remain there as the divine protector of the city. Even today, devotees worship him as the “Kotwal of Kashi” and seek his blessings for protection, courage, and freedom from fear.

What Devotees Do on Kalashtami?

On Kalashtami, devotees wake up early in the morning, take a bath, and wear clean clothes before beginning the vrat. Many people keep a strict nirjala vrat, while others consume fruits, milk, and simple sattvic food.

Throughout the day, devotees worship Bhagwan Kaal Bhairav and Bhagwan Shiv with fragrant flowers, bilva leaves, sesame seeds, mustard oil, incense, and diyas. Many spend time chanting “Om Hreem Bum Bhairavaya Namaha,” reading Shiv Sahasranama (1,008 names of Bhagwan Shiv), or listening to Bhagwan Shiv bhajans with devotion.

Devotees also feed dogs (especially black) on this day, as the dog is believed to be the sacred mount (sawari) of Bhagwan Bhairav. Many devotees offer milk, roti, or sweets as an act of seva and devotion.

Those who wish to participate in such devotional activities can also explore the sacred Sevas arranged by Sanatan Sansaar for this holy occasion.
