What is the Significance of Ravi Pradosh Vrat?

Ravi Pradosh Vrat is one of the most sacred vrats dedicated to Bhagwan Shiv. Since it falls on a Sunday, the day dedicated to Bhagwan Surya, devotees worship both deities on the same day.

In the morning, devotees offer Arghya to Bhagwan Surya, preferably within the first hour after sunrise. They pray for good health, confidence, and success in life.

The word “Pradosh” refers to the evening time just after sunset, which is believed to be highly auspicious for Shiv Puja. According to Hindu beliefs, during this sacred time, Bhagwan Shiv blesses devotees who worship him with devotion and a pure heart with peace, prosperity, and happiness in life.

What is the Story Behind Ravi Pradosh Vrat?

As per Hindu scriptures, there was a poor Brahmin family. They loved and trusted Bhagwan Shiv with all their heart. The Brahmin's wife never missed a Pradosh Vrat. She prayed to Bhagwan Shiv every single time, with full faith.

Then one day, something bad happened. Her son went to bathe in the Ganga river, just like any other day. But on his way home, the king's soldiers stopped him. They said he had stolen something. He hadn't. But they didn't listen. They put him in jail.

His mother heard the news. She was scared, but she didn't give up hope. That evening, she kept the Pradosh Vrat again. She prayed hard to Bhagwan Shiv. She asked only one thing: keep my son safe.

That night, something amazing happened. Bhagwan Shiv came into the king's dream. He told the king clearly that the boy was innocent. When the king woke up, he didn't ignore the dream. He checked the matter himself. He found out the boy had done nothing wrong. So he let him go and even gave the family land and riches. Since then, devotees observe Ravi Pradosh Vrat with complete faith and sincerity, believing that Bhagwan Shiv will protect them.

What Devotees Do on Ravi Pradosh Vrat?

Devotees wake up early in the morning, take a bath, and wear clean clothes. Many devotees begin the day by offering Arghya to Bhagwan Surya using a copper vessel along with jaggery, wheat, and red flowers. Many spend time chanting “Om Hraam Hreem Hraum Sah Suryaya Namah,” reading Surya Sahasranama (1,000 names of Bhagwan Surya), or listening to Surya Dev bhajans with devotion.

In the evening, during Pradosh Kaal, devotees worship Bhagwan Shiv, visit temples, and perform Shiv Rudrabhishek puja. Many chant “Om Namah Shivaya,” recite Shiv Chalisa or Mahamrityunjaya Mantra, and listen to Shiv bhajans.

Some devotees also keep a strict fast and avoid grains (such as rice, oats, and corn), onions, garlic, and other tamasic foods throughout the day. Meanwhile, some devotees consume only fruits, milk, and simple sattvic food as part of the falahar vrat.

All devotees who cannot visit Bhagwan Shiv and Bhagwan Surya temples can worship at home by following these simple steps:

●     Add a few drops of Ganga Jal to the water and take a bath

●     Offer Arghya to Bhagwan Surya using a copper vessel

●     Light a diya and offer red flowers, jaggery, and wheat

●     Chant “Om Hraam Hreem Hraum Sah Suryaya Namah” or recite “Surya Sahasranama”

●     Pray to Bhagwan Surya for peace, wisdom, and spiritual growth

●     In the evening, clean the puja area and place an image or idol of Bhagwan Shiv

●     Light a diya and incense, and offer water, milk, Panchamrit, bilva leaves, flowers, and fruits

●     Chant “Om Namah Shivaya” or recite “Mahamrityunjaya Mantra”

● End the puja by doing aarti during Pradosh Kaal
